Adding ClassRanked as an External Learning Tool in Canvas

You can easily add ClassRanked as an assignment inside your Canvas course. This allows students to access their course evaluations directly through Canvas. The instructions here show you how to add ClassRanked as an external learning tool in assignments but the same instructions apply to creating a module dedicated for ClassRanked.

Step 1: Navigate to the Assignments tab in your Course

Open your Canvas course.
Select the Assignments tab from the left-hand menu.
Click + Assignment to create a new assignment.

Step 2: Set Up Basic Assignment Details

Give your assignment a name (for example: Course Evaluations).

Optionally, add a short message in the description field.

  Course Evaluations are open. Feedback helps us improve your learning experience. Please click on the button below to go to ClassRanked and leave some feedback. It really helps!

Step 3: Configure the Submission Type

Scroll down to the Submission Type section.
Change the type from Online (sometimes the default) to External Tool.
Click Find next to the URL field.
Look for the ClassRanked tool in the list. Depending on your school’s setup, it will be named something like: ClassRanked Course Evals
Select the app and click Select.

Step 4: Enable “Load in a New Tab”

After selecting the tool, check the box labeled Load This Tool in a New Tab.

Important: If this is not enabled, students may have trouble accessing their evaluations.

Step 5: Save and Publish

Click Save or Save & Publish.
You’ll now see your new assignment (e.g., Course Evaluations) appear in the Assignments list.

When students open the assignment and click Load Course Evaluations in a New Window, they’ll be taken directly into their ClassRanked account — no additional login required.

Other Access Points

By default, ClassRanked is also available in a few other places in Canvas:

Within each course’s sidebar (ClassRanked Course Evals).
At the account level sidebar (ClassRanked Course Evals).

Adding it as an assignment is optional but provides a clear, direct link for students to complete their evaluations.
